MANILA, Philippines — Seven volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported on Thursday.

Based on the 24-hour monitoring of Phivolcs, Alert Level 3 is still hoisted over Kanlaon, indicating a high level of volcanic unrest.

State seismologists also logged 1,250 tons of sulfur dioxide.

The volcano’s crater generated a 75-meter-high weak plume, which was drifting in the southwest and south-southwest direction.

“Volcano edifice is inflated,” Phivolcs also said.

Noting Kanlaon’s continued unrest, the state seismology department reminded the public that sudden explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, a pyroclastic density current (PDC), rockfall, and lahar during heavy rains may occur.

Phivolcs advised residents within a six-kilometer radius to evacuate from the summit of the volcano.

The flying of any aircraft close to the Kanlaon is also prohibited, it also underscored.

Phivolcs first raised the alert level status of Kanlaon to Alert level 3 in December 2024 following its eruption. /das
