MANILA, Philippines — Education Secretary Sonny Angara has vowed to assist the city government of Taguig in expanding its educational infrastructure.
According to the city government of Taguig in a statement, Angara made the commitment during his visit to Tenement Elementary School in Barangay Western Bicutan on the first day of classes.

“Mayor Lani (Cayetano) is requesting that the National Housing Authority lend or donate the land behind the Tenement. We will assist in finding a solution to this issue of limited space,” Angara said, as quoted by the Taguig government.
Angara also praised Taguig government for its education programs, particularly the Taguig Learners’ Certificate (TLC) Scholarship, which he tagged as a model initiative that other local governments can learn from.
Taguig City’s TLC Scholarship provides graduating public elementary school students in Taguig the opportunity to pursue high school in partner private schools within the city.
It was developed to decongest public schools and provide a more conducive learning environment for students with the city government shouldering both tuition and miscellaneous fees.
Each scholar also receives a P10,000 allowance for other school-related needs.
“Taguig is commendable because it has the TLC Scholarship. When public schools become overcrowded, students are given vouchers so they can choose a nearby private school instead,” Angara said.
“We are currently studying this as well for other areas like Cavite and Laguna, where public schools are becoming overcrowded,” he added.
To date, Tagug’s TLC program has 61 partner private high schools across the city. /cb
