Teves back in BJMP custody after surgery

Arnolfo Teves Jr. — MARIANNE BERMUDEZ
MANILA, Philippines — Former Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. was transferred back to the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) late Tuesday after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix.
Teves’ counsel, Ferdinand Topacio, said his client was returned to BJMP Annex 2 in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
“He was accompanied by one of our associates, Atty. Raphael Andrada and numerous security personnel of the BJMP, as well as elements of the [Philippine National Police] Special Action Force,” Topacio told reporters on Wednesday in a Viber message.
According to the lawyer, Teves was still experiencing moderate stomach pain and will request follow-up checkups from his doctors at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH).
The checkups will be conducted at Annex 2 next week, Topacio added.
Teves was taken out of detention and brought to a nearby public hospital on June 17 after experiencing severe abdominal pain.
He was later transferred to the Philippine General Hospital, where he underwent a laparoscopic appendectomy.
The former lawmaker faces multiple criminal charges for allegedly masterminding the assassination of his political rival, former Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, in a brazen daytime attack that left nine others dead in March 2023./mcm
