Driver in fatal Naia crash tested negative for alcohol, drugs, says police

MANILA, Philippines — The alcohol and drug tests came back negative for the driver of the sports utility vehicle (SUV) in the fatal Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) crash, according to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP AVSEGROUP).
The incident occurred on Sunday morning at the Naia Terminal 1 departure entrance, leaving at least two people dead and four injured.
The SUV driver was then arrested by police.
“Following his arrest, the suspect underwent a series of tests and medical evaluations. Both his alcohol and drug tests yielded negative results,” the PNP AVSEGROUP said of the driver in a statement on Tuesday.

The suspect is detained at the AVSEGROUP’s mobile patrol security unit detention facility.
He underwent virtual inquest proceedings before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office for a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to property, according to the AVSEGROUP.

As for the two people killed in the crash, the police said autopsy results showed the 29-year-old victim died of “blunt force trauma to the head and spinal cord.”
Meanwhile, the four-year-old victim died of “blunt force trauma to the head and left lower extremities.”
